The CFA® charter represents exemplary understanding of ethical portfolio management and advanced investment analysis, and is available to practicing or aspiring investment professionals. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree and at least 4,000 hours of work or higher education experience acquired over the course of 3 consecutive years. Work experience doesn't have to be in the financial sector, but it must involve the application of business skills. Other requirements including having an international passport and completing a professional conduct statement.
In order to obtain CFA® designation, candidates must pass three levels of exams. The first level is entirely multiple choice, while the last includes vignette-supported multiple choice and essay questions. Questions cover topics such as financial reporting and analysis, alternative investments, and quantitative methods. The program takes an average of 4 years to complete and, depending on the candidate, typically involves more than 300 hours of study for each exam.
